Programme
The course offers flexibility, enabling you to specialise in one discipline or opt for a broad-based pattern of study in Fine Art. It has been studied in Leicester for over 100 years and today’s course maintains the high profile education established by the School of Fine Art in 1897.

Year one
Studies include options in painting, sculpture, printmaking, video, photography, electronic media, drawing and contextual and professional studies.

Year two
Develops individual studio practice in one or more of the areas above. The course allows you to tackle a range of approaches to Fine Art via projects, workshops and self directed study.

Year three
In the final year you will negotiate and develop your individual creative practice, culminating in an exhibition. A professional project forms part of the final year and typically might involve an exhibition or placement.

Facilities
Individual studio space is available and well-equipped workshops cover the practical aspects of printmaking, sculptural processes, photography, video and digital media techniques and the skills associated with contemporary approaches to painting.

Teaching and assessment
Individual studio practice, group projects, workshops, group criticism, lectures, seminars, study trips and one-to-one tutorials form the basis of this studio-based taught course. Assessment is through a presentation of coursework.

Study abroad
It is possible to study abroad in Europe and in the USA during part of year two. Exchanges in Europe are organised through the Erasmus programme with universities in France, Holland, Belgium and Spain. In addition, a short study visit to a major European or US city forms part of the second year course.

Awards and competitions
Fine Art students have had recent success in both local and international competitions. This includes selection for the National Art Mercury Prize and an award to a second year student to exhibit in Berlin alongside a group of renowned artists. They also showed at a major exhibition of student work held at Ingenious Media in London.

Career opportunities
The course offers the opportunity to develop the technical and critical skills associated with creativity in Fine Art to a high standard.

Graduates of Fine Art are equipped for a wide range of art and art-related career options. Some graduates go on to pursue postgraduate study and develop careers as artists or designers, whilst others enter a wide variety of fields of employment including teaching, arts administration, art therapy, conservation and restoration, theatre design, film and television production, illustration, publishing, gallery management and the crafts.
